052- Proyecto Dos

This project demonstrates presentational speaking, writing and interpersonal communication. I chose to use a web chat to communicate with my Costa Rican sister and discuss ideas and places to include in my project. With the information I gathered, I wrote and spoke over pictures using Voicethread. Its nice that I could incorporate both written and oral text. I was able to use my Spanish twice in the process of making this project; first during my conversation and secondly turning those ideas into text and comments for my project, while broadening my knowledge of Costa Rica and various places of attraction. The project is a culmination of the goals I most want to fulfill in the DULAP course.

052- Culture Blog

The topic of this blog was in regards to the consumption of animal parts not normally consumed in Western culture. The focus of my comment interpreted the blog in terms of the target culture’s underlying value system. Eating is a key example of a social behavior that varies from culture to culture. As learned in this blog, Latin American countries do waste any part of the animal. My response blog highlighted this social phenomenon as a reflection of Latino’s attitude toward consumption and waste. Even the less desired body parts become the focal point of many traditional dishes in Latin American cuisine. Many people from the United States see this cuisine as primitive and a reflection of an under developed country that eats the very last part of the animal. What we all really should take from this social behavior, as described in my blog, is “the ingenuity to find a way to prepare all parts of the body” and create a decadent dish from scraps of nothing.

In the blog, I focused on the social phenomena I experienced when I traveled to Costa Rica. The biggest adjustment I had to make was to time. What I learned from being there, as described in my blog, was the more relaxed attitude Latinos take in regards to time. This behavior reflects the laid back lives they have. Contrasting to the United States, where everything is rushed, Latin Americans approach life in a less hurried manner and take time to enjoy life. It can be frustrating for someone who travels there without an understanding of this social behavior and often it can be misread as lazy or unreliable.

052- Writing Sample One

FINAL SAMPLE WITH REVISIONS

Seas cómico y no te preocupes. A mis padres les gusta pasarla bien. Noseas nervioso.

No te sientes agobiado. Te amo mucho y pienso que ellos van a amarte también.

Mil besos,

Allie

052- Audio Sample Two

This audio sample represents an artifact that demonstrates presentational speaking. I tried to focus on improving the intonation in my speech for this sample. I believe I recorded it around ten times before selecting this sample as the final product. There was a model sample that formed the foundation of this sample. Actively listening to the model of a native speaker gave me the opportunity to pay close attention to specific letters and emphasis. With that, this can also demonstrate interpretive listening. Understanding the model was the first part, followed by practicing their intonations and pronunciations helped me create a better audio sample.

Goals

Strategies for Meeting Goals

Semester’s End Self-Evaluation

Course Goal for Interpretive Listening

I can understand extended speech and follow complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar. I can understand sources such as TV news, current affairs programs, and films in standard language.

I will prepare for meeting this goal by watching tv in Spanish, reading Yahoo! Telemundo news, and actively listen to radio satations and or music in spanish to better my listening and understanding skills.

I would have to say I met this goal. Throughout the semester, listening to my language partner and watching different types of media in Spanish, I understand the conversations.

Course Goal for Interpretive Reading

I can read texts such as articles and reports that are concerned with contemporary problems written from a particular viewpoint or perspective. I can understand contemporary literary prose.

Reading latino magazines or newspapers and BBCmundo articles are a source for practice. Things I do not understanding can be looked up or ask my language partner.

I definitely struggled with this goal but after practicing and learning techniques during the 051 course, my interpretive reading skills are stronger.

Course Goal for Interpersonal Speaking

I can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible. I can take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts and support my views.

Practicing speaking with both my language partner and any other people whom I know that are native speakers. Constant conversations will help with my ability to respond with spontaneity.

This goal I met through the practice sessions as well as using my skills to help the Spanish-speaking community where I work, relaying understandable information.

Course Goal for Presentational Speaking

I can present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects. I can explain a viewpoint on a topical issue and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Being confident and preparing before hand will allow me to have a better presentation. Proper research and speaking in practice out loud will help.

I have improved in this aspect of language learning, but I feel there is room for expansion. With more practice I know I can fully meet this goal.

Course Goal for Presentational Writing

I can write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to my interests. I can write texts such as an essay or report that conveys information or gives reasons in support of or against a particular point of view. I can write texts such as letters highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences.

I will practice my writing skills through communication with native speaker pen pals and taking class writing assignments seriously. Study of grammar and writing will also help me better write a text that successfully conveys the message at the correct level of Spanish.

My writing skills this semester are the most improved area. The in-class practice writing, Vistas activities, and writing samples show growth in both my vocabulary and overall written communication skills.

Personal Goal One

Be able to use more of a conversational tone rather than a generic, textbook voice.

Practice and ask questions about words I can use as transitions or sentence fillers.

I worked on integrating personality into my conversations and became more confident with a variety of words and tones.

Personal Goal Two

Improve the depth of my vocabulary.

Reading the texbook, articles, film, and speaking will widen my vocabulary.

This is another area where my goal hasn’t been completely met, but has been worked on and needs more practice.

Mi Proyecto Dos

Download file "Proyecto Dos.docx"

For my final project of the program, I chose to showcase my writing skills and created a project using a format I had never used before. I made a timeline of the life of Fidel Castro. With his worsening health condition and decaying governmental power, his rise and fall as leader of Cuba provided an interesting research topic and outlet to explore one of the political systems of a Spanish-speaking country. Using circavie.com, an online website that allows anyone to create online timelines I explored from the upbringings of Castro to the most recent activity. Through learning his past, I also learned the reasons behind Cuba allowing a man such as Fidel to rise to power. The previous leader bled the country dry and created many enemies to his government. Also from this assignment, I learned the influence Castro and his government had on other Latin American countries and the rough relations with the United States. One of the benefits of choosing a Latin American leader was the ability to search websites written in Spanish and not just translate English sources. This project provided another opportunity to utilize writing skills and work on creating professional and educational facts about the life of Castro. This project pushed the boundaries of my skills and I expanded a whole new area of my vocabulary; another of my personal goals for this semester.

Querido Renato,
